The team from BHDM Design had a regular trek from their mid-town offices up to Hamilton Heights in Harlem for their latest job — the ground-up renovation of Hogshead Tavern — and the subway journeys left an impression on Dan Mazzerini and his crew. The hugely attractive glazed tiled section of the interior was inspired by their time riding the public transport, in combination with the owner’s Irish heritage which provided the rich green colour that borders the traditional black and white.
The premises was formerly a discount store in a retail block, and needed completely gutting before the BHDM magic could happen. And do you know, there is something faintly magical about the job they have done here — it’s possibly the installation of Narnia-esque snow-covered branches with their fairy lights amid an otherwise industrial environment that does it. The industrial vibe is a reflection of the venue’s main focus — craft brewing and distilling — so pipework and metal surfaces feature heavily. It might be a bit out of the way for many Manhattanites, but Hogshead Tavern is certainly worth an inspiring subway ride to seek out.
