Who needs a year-round DFS sofa sale when you can make your own from three old chairs and a slip cover? Not artist Greg Papove, for one. His latest wallet-friendly creation, Socks + Furniture, arrives just as the worldwide austerity squeeze approaches a death-grip.
Consisting of three items – the sofa, a lamp and a table – Papove has used an artistic slant on the make-do-and-mend philosophy to create a quirky and fun lounge set. He aims to create fresh objects from tired old ones in an ecologically sound way. All inspired by socks.
The Unify sofa speaks for itself with its simplicity; the collection of ill-matching chairs unified by the all covering giant slip/sock. The Five Toes coffee table draws on the idea of legs as supporting devices. The socked legs slot in to a surface created using a vacuum-packing method, and is easily dismantled for transportation. The third of the sock-based trinity, the Zap Lamp, is a very interactive item. The user is required to generate static by rubbing their own hosiery on the shag carpet base. A sensitive switch registers the static electricity and turn the device on. A bright idea indeed. Beats trawling around DFS on a Sunday afternoon.
