The atmosphere hits you before you even walk in. The studded front doors of the Downtown Mexico hotel look like the kind a besieged El Jefe might have hidden behind as a thousand bullets tore through the air.
The only blood likely to be drawn at the 17th Century colonial hotel these days, however, might be from the cutting-edge cool design work from Cherem Arquitectos. Blending the gringo legacy with industrial features, Downtown Mexico has successfully created a modern look that loses nothing of the historical luxury. Particular highlights are the rooftop pool/bar area, pictured here looking stunning in the dusk, and the tiled and frescoed eating area.
Downtown Mexico is located in Mexico City’s paved Centro Historico, a UNESCO world heritage site, so there’s plenty to see and do if you get tired of wandering around the hotel pretending your name is Don Something.
