Sounding like something from Star Trek, 21st Century Light Space Modulator is actually a renovation of unused and unloved space under Hungerford Bridge at London’s Southbank.

Created by Jason Bruges Studio, the project was commissioned by Havells-Sylvania, part of India’s largest lighting manufacturer. As you’d expect, lighting plays a major role in what’s going on here, but not more so than the people and the surrounding environment, for the lights react (modulate) to the comings and goings around them. This could be people under the bridge purposely interacting with the installation or the vibrations from the trains passing overhead. The lights themselves were inspired by László Moholy-Nagy’s Light Prop for an Electric Stage which he created in the 1930s, but you knew that already.

The dancers in our pictures are part of Akademi, the leading UK South Asian dance act, who attended the opening and demonstrated how the magic happens. Beam me up…
