The German sculptor Isa Genzken once told photographer Wolfgang Tillmans that sculpture “must have a certain relation to reality”. At first glance, her work’s link to the real world seems tentative, at best.
But look a little closer and the seemingly surreal reveals itself to be exactly the opposite, examining the world as it is, albeit from a very different perspective. Using just about every medium you can think of, Genzken pieces together seemingly disparate subjects to form a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.
A collection of new and recent works by the veteran artist is currently on display at Hauser and Wirth on London’s Savile Row. From the towering photographic collages to the unlikely pedestal pieces and outlandishly adorned mannequin figures, Genzken never ceases to both challenge and entertain. You have until 12th January.
