Offering the perfect Christmas gift for those with a warped sense of humour, Angela Rossi’s Beat Up Creations is creating tableware that will have Auntie Mabel choking on her festive turkey.
A self-taught artist, Rossi’s central premise is salvaging old things and giving them a new lease of life, often by grafting on something dead, or old, or both. Her plates, in particular, are a twisted mixture of ornately decorated china in a classical, sometimes twee style, subverted by the addition of an utterly unsuitable image. Occasionally her work is subtle – Mabel might not even notice the USS Enterprise cruising past the Dutch windmill on the Delftware-esque example – but more often the contrast is purposefully striking, as in the use of pop culture icons or fabulous creations featuring weird animal/human hybrids.
The L.A artist goes one further with her zombie plates – using already strangely lifeless vintage portraits and giving them an undead makeover – but we’re not sure they would do much for anyone’s appetite, so we’ll glaze over those…
