If one were to make a couple of sweeping generalisations about the Dutch, one might say they seem like a fun-loving people who aren’t too shy when it comes to sex. Roll your eyes and accuse us of stereotyping if you like, but in rebuttal we present the work of Amsterdam artist Pieter Janssen, aka Parra.
The Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York City is playing host to the collection Tracy had a hard Sunday, in which his subjects are caught on ceramic, canvas and paper in various compromising situations and nearly always undressed. Signature features of this exhibition material are his use of vivid red and blue in many of the 2D works, and the proboscis noses of his characters. There’s a strong pop-art flavour to Parra’s work, with more than a shade of lost pop-prince Keith Haring and psychedelic poster boy Victor Moscoso in evidence. You can take a furtive peek in person until 23rd March.
