In the past the workers at the NDSM wharf in Amsterdam concerned themselves with shipbuilding, but these days the creative energy of the folk in the dock is focused on more artistic endeavours. Where once were industrial units, we now find a commune of ateliers, and at the centre of this thriving hub of creativity is the Nooderlicht Café restaurant/cultural venue; keeping the community of artisans fed, watered and entertained by offering both quality grub and event hosting under one impressive roof.
The venue’s campfire is host to live music, DJs and events attended by locals and travellers alike; being just a free ferry hop away from the perennially popular city means there’s always plenty of people dropping in to see what’s going on at Nooderlicht, and they don’t have to peer too hard through the glass and plastic walls of the towering transparent centrepiece to get a good look. Inside, the spaces – which can be individually rented for private functions – benefit from the input of the neighbouring artists; a lovely mosaic bar and some beautiful night-lighting are just two of the highlights. Weigh anchor at the wharf in the summer months for the best of the action.
