Part of the enduring appeal of Fred Perry’s signature polo shirt is its simplicity – the iconic piece of casual wear remains instantly recognisable 60 years after the first appearance of the famous laurel wreath. Such a milestone anniversary required something special however, so the brand called on its close links with design and art, popular culture and sports personalities to put together a collection of individually designed shirts that will travel the world before being auctioned for charity.
The first 25 of the 60 personalised designs are on tour now having been unveiled at London’s Dover Street Market earlier this year – cycling mod-hero Bradley Wiggins penned his happy birthday message on the front of a classic white version, whilst the likes of Damon Albarn and The Specials present equally simplistic affairs. Those with a little more imagination, and a deeper design background, took their variations on a theme a little bit further; some smashing straight through “individual” and entering the realm of “bonkers”. When the collection goes under the hammer later this year the Amy Winehouse Foundation will be the beneficiary.
