Park your bike outside and park yourself on one of the many comfy chairs and sofas to enjoy some refreshment at this cycle-centric café and shop in Berlin. In fact you don’t even need a bike, as staff at Standert are as well-trained to sell you one from the bike retail side of the business as they are to brew up a skinny latte or blend a fruit juice on the barista side of this two-wheeled machine.
Actually it’s more of a tricycle, having a bike repair workshop in the back, but that doesn’t sound very grown up, although mechanic Flow does look a very serious man. What Standert are serious about is their produce – it’s fair-trade this and locally-sourced organic that, with nutrition being high on the list of priorities for their leg-pumping customers. The bicycle theme is as abundant as you’d expect on the design front, and they’ve strayed from the shop through to the café, mounted on bare-brick walls wherever you look. Overall, a well-engineered German tandem.
