Stepping into the dance club Tendinha dos Clérigos in Oporto, Portugal is like stepping inside a giant ruby, and not just because the venue is extremely, erm, red. The interior, by designers AVA Architects, is angled as if resembling a cut example of the precious gemstone, with artificial light emanating from the gaps in the installation refracting around the space to create a subtly multi-toned yet consistently devilish environment.
Some of the differing dimensions of the rooms in the downtown club were informed by very dull but essential safety, structural and accessibility considerations which we won’t even pretend to care about, but what has transpired is an interesting and atmospheric place that keeps changing shape on you as you move around – all the while pulsing with the sultry red colour scheme which seeps into the bar areas and staff quarters. If the devil wears Prada, she probably goes dancing at Tendinha dos Clérigos.
