Smoke machines are rarely used to good effect. Wedding DJ; no. School disco; no. Nestled in the corner of a small room at New Dutch Design, during Milan Design Week; surprisingly, yes. Eindhoven Design Academy graduate Frederik Roijé had a sullied smog tinge to his smoke machine that may have had his wedding guests running for their lives however, the designer recreating an industrial revolution era factory to showcase his latest product, Smokestack.
Bringing character, charm and humour to his work is clearly something Roijé relishes, other works on display at The Design Factory included Family Furniture, a design piece that brings kids into the often adult dominated world of designer furniture – whilst Holy Homes, which dates back to 2007, puts a new meaning on “Birdhouse in Your Soul”. With a canny knack for infusing design with personality, here’s hoping Roijé’s factory doesn’t run out of steam any time soon…
