Funny places are sports bars; cavernous and largely vacuous, the bars in America are propped up by trucker-cap-wearing moustached gentlemen with infinite knowledge of Super Bowl history, bar snacks and head gaskets, whilst their British cousins knock about in sports bars with sticky carpets and steroid-fuelled young men waiting for their perma-tanned partners to shop for tonight’s party frock, stag parties drift in and out, and the air of violent tension can be cut with a knife. Over in Bucharest, they appear to be a wildly different proposition – or at least Stadio does, thanks to designers Radu Calin, Sebastian Mindroiu of studio Picktwo.
There’s a ramshackle warmth to Calin and Mindroiu’s interiors, surprising given its location inside the atrium of an office building – hardly the most convivial of spots. But the devil is in the detail, so they say, and it’s a maxim that’s certainly not been lost on this duo, from decorative bootlaces to a vintage flyer for Steve McQueen’s 1971 action flick Le Mans, precious time has been spent on meticulously appointing this quirky space. As seen at previously featured Bucharest watering holes Atelier Mecanic and Biutiful, the Romanian’s enjoy tinkering with a little vintage paraphernalia, and elements of that are at work here too, Stadio’s design duo applying a weather-worn feel to this new venue. Inviting, stylish and likely to attract a better class of sports fan – that’s surely a hattrick worth celebrating…
