The kings of miniature monstrosities and terrifying table-top tableaux, the Chapman brothers, are back. In their signature small-scale, large-scope style, The Sum of All Evil is Jake and Dinos’s latest examination of mankind’s failures, weaknesses and atrocities in the powerfully graphic manner that first propelled them to stardom in the 1990s.
Here we have something of an amalgamation of themes the two explored in earlier works; the evil tortures of Hell make a reappearance in a fourth tableau, the Nazi soldiers joined now by less obvious villains of the modern world. The terrible crucifixion of Great Deeds Against the Dead is echoed in the field of Ronald McDonalds, a character who is also seen with the company’s other characters displaying more ambiguous allegiance. White Cube, Hong Kong, is the first Chinese gallery to exhibit the Chapmans – as well as the Hell work, which fills the ground floor, the brothers have produced a new series of four dioramas expanding on the Hell themes, and some re-worked found paintings, which can all be seen until 31st August.
