Soft as Stone

Brit photographer grabs America's attention...

Britain’s artistic stock has arguably never been higher in America, not since the days of Cool Britannia anyway, with actors and musicians seemingly handed juicy gigs straight off the plane. Further evidence of this renaissance can be seen in the creation of Britweek, showcasing the best of British artistry across California and Miami, and as part of the festival Matthew Stone has been invited to exhibit at his first Los Angeles solo show.

Stone has something of a naughty reputation, organising guerilla art shenanigans and squat parties, and his photographs are no less provocative. Ecstasy includes new, somewhat orgiastic works where everyone looks to be having a hoot, except the subjects with the plastic examination equipment inserted into them. One of the highlights from the new material, the ghostly Upward Thrust, is achieved by shooting a black and white image using lasers and an ultra-long exposure. Pieces from his previous two collections will also be on display; L.A. gallery Subliminal Projects is hosting Ecstasy until tomorrow.
