Funny how the mind wanders. Our first thought when appraising Loom was of those old silent film shorts, where a man emerges from a beach chalet in comically high speed, posturing in an all-in-one bathing suit for the benefit of the coquettish ladies looking on. It must be the bright blue wooden changing stalls that did it.
Dragging ourselves back to the point momentarily, owner Anthony Keyworth and Tonic Design sent us of on our flight of fancy at this men’s outfitters in the CBD of Cape Town. Pairing the vibrant panelling with calm salmon paint over crumbling brickwork, the outlet specialises in “post-youth” clothing, something we can identify with all too readily. Accessories range from humongous watches to Struggle Inc.-designed Drugs mugs, whilst fashion-wise Loom is on point; Comme des Garçons, A.P.C., Odd Future collabs… there’s also limited edition sneakers from Nike, Adidas and Puma. At 58 square metres it ain’t huge, but Loom certainly maximises its impact.
