The Real Deal

Introducing the wistful wonder of London's most exciting young female vocalist...

Steely cold heartbreak, breathless haunting urban sass – FKA Twigs (‘formerly known as’ simply Twigs) recalls Grimes by way of Sade, mainstream r&b via The xx’s ghostly minimalism. Fitting then, that the Gloucestershire-born London-based artist’s hotly-tipped EP2 (that’s young Twigs’ imaginatively-titled second EP) should be set for release on Young Turks – home to the Wandsworth trio.

Following an accomplished low-key debut EP on an unknown label at the tail-end of 2012 and the equally impressive How’s That in May of this year, it’s the release of a frankly remarkable track this week that’s set the music blogosphere into gushing meltdown. And with good reason. Produced, once again, by Yeezus collaborator Arca – Water Me comes complete with a (literally) eye-popping video courtesy of Canadian-Japanese creative Jesse Kanda. Cynics may point to the polished professionalism of the mysteriously-released debut EP, the appearance on the cover of i-D magazine prior to the release of a single, but they can go and crash someone else’s party – the proof is in the pudding, and with talent this real, Ms FKA can do no wrong. Expect big things, from this little lady.
