We Heart’s collective tootsies are only just getting back to somewhere resembling normality, as four days manning our pop-up Create GB shop at Tent London, during this year’s London Design Festival, left them in serious need of attention. In amongst the pleasure of meeting fans of We Heart face-to-face and, of course, digesting untold amounts of design nourishment, we had the chance to toy around with Sony’s latest smartphone gadget du jour – their DSC-QX10 Smart Lens.
Transforming your smartphone into a fully-fledged camera, their smart lens is billed as allowing you to “go beyond what you normally see with your smartphone”, and do just that it does – by some distance. On the face of it, the smart lens concept is one that introduces an 18MP Exmor™ R CMOS sensor and 10x optical zoom to your NFC or WiFi-enabled device (smartphone, tablet and so on), but it is in its flexibility and mobility where things get seriously fun. With device in one hand and lens in another, angles and perspectives can quickly be reoriented – overhead views, low down, around corners; Sony’s Optical SteadyShot ensuring the best possible shots from your spy-camera meanderings.
Capable of shooting high quality images and video, on both Android and iOS devices, our QX10 caused quite a stir amongst Tent visitors and fellow exhibitors alike – practically every time the lens came out, so did a new set of admirers; new fandangled technology and clandestine image capturing clearly stirring the inner Inspector Gadget in all of us. Only just hitting the shelves and virtual shelves of the nation’s technology emporiums – and, of course, available direct from Sony themselves – expect to be seeing tiny lenses in the hands of the nation’s tech-savvy before long…
