Luigi Ghirri, widely regarded as one of the most important Italian photographers of the 20th Century, knew a landscape when he saw one. His 1980s series Profile of the Clouds encapsulates what Ghirri came to be known for – through ceaseless experimentation with technique and paper he developed a mastery of muted colours and matte finishes, from which came a fresh perspective on the Italian countryside. Ghirri died prematurely in 1992 aged just 49, but his oeuvre was already strong enough to cement his place in the greats of Italian landscape photography, and now there is a chance to own both signed vintage c-prints and modern ones, recreated from negatives held by his family estate.
Ghirri’s work has been chosen to launch Artuner, an online gallery and curation service aimed at making it easier, less daunting and more affordable to begin collecting art. The site allows viewers to see works both in minute detail and in a virtual gallery setting, giving a better idea what the piece will look like on the wall.
