Want to know where Emma Watson buys her shoes? Can’t help you. Dying to know how St Gwyneth balances motherhood with acting? Move along please, this isn’t for you. Riposte is, in its own words, a new smart magazine for women – a welcome respite from the vapid celebrity gossip mags and offering more substance than glossy style bibles.
Of course, there will be style, but the women to be found gracing the pages of Riposte are there on deeper merit and topics up for discussion come from a broad spectrum. Art and design, business, music, innovation, technology, politics and food are all under consideration; wherever women are leading, Riposte will be following up with features based on real interaction rather than polished PR soundbites. Founded by KK Outlet curator Danielle Pender, the magazine’s design is also mercifully free of guff. Riposte’s creative director Shaz Madani turned to old copies of National Geographic for inspiration, and isn’t afraid to let the subjects breathe without an overwhelming number of entry points and gimmicky flashes. It’s a proper read. The first issue (in a limited run of 1,000) comes with a 16-page A5 supplement on Linder in addition to the 128-page main book, and other women of note in the inaugural issue include The New Yorker art editor Françoise Mouly and set designer extraordinaire Es Devlin. Riposte #1 is due on 27 November, and you can pre-order it now.
