Warm Glow

Feel the sand between your toes with beautiful oasis-inspired furniture...

As biting winds whip across the wintery lands of the northern hemisphere, warm the cockles of your heart with Oáza, a furniture collection from Czech designer Klára Šumová evoking all the lushness of a desert oasis after which it is named – there’s evidence of Šumová’s time interning with Stockholm’s Note Design Studio and a cheeky punch of retro Palm Springs aesthetics is thrown in for good measure. Graphics come courtesy of Canadian Dirk Wright; now based in London, the designer has collaborated with Klára on a few projects previously including one for Bakalowits Chandelier Company at last year’s Vienna Design Week.

The outcome then was a crystal cool, but this is a much warmer affair. Presented at this year’s designblok, tall palm tree stands proudly in a deco style, bringing together wood and aluminium in a harmonious blend that is repeated throughout the collection. A fabric room divider succeeds in deftly conveying exotic climes through it’s depiction of palm fronds, calls to mind both water and sky with a rich blue colour, suggests scudding white clouds in the background, and the orange warmth of a sunset completes the atmospheric piece. Other elements of the collection include the chunky, reflective metal constructions called Baby Sister Stool and Baby Night Table – available galvanised or powder coated – and a sand-dune covered day bed made of maple.
