If the measure of a place is how long it takes to say the name, then Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels Seven Dials is world class. Newly opened in London’s Covent Garden, CVSSD (we like to abbreviate in case we die before finishing the sentence) is dedicated to the finer things in life, particularly wines from lesser-known, hand laboured vineyards which will eventually run to a 400-plus bottle list. That should keep even the most enthusiastic oenophile very happy for a good long time.
The venue revels in its upmarket image, and even plays on it; the croque madame, for example, has been reinvented with truffled ham and quail egg and is now called the “posh madame”. Dorothée Meilichzon of Chzon Design is responsible for CVSSD’s well-bred good looks, designing some cracking seating in lively patterned fabrics and lighting coming in the form of bell-shaped pendants. Chzon has been involved in a number of projects for owners Experimental Group, including the Experimental Cocktail Clubs in London and New York. Great stuff.
