Product designers Roderick and Claire Vos decided to open a bricks and mortar showroom on the back of the success of their online webshop. The couple, both graduates of the Design Academy Eindhoven, work for several high profile clients, but also produce their own label, Moodworks, and the showroom contains examples of both sides of the business. Claire explained that they wanted to create a place where the products could be seen working together in context, rather than as isolated objects in a browser window.
The showroom also offers the public a chance to engage with the designers and their practice. The premises has plenty of room – it’s on the site of a former hospital in the Dutch city of Den Bosch – and is arranged over two open plan floors of display space and workshop. Roderick said he wants to dispel the mythology behind product design and bring the customer closer to the creative process, and Moodworks customers can see things taking shape, from drawing board to prototype model, in the studio. The place has more than a bit of “mad professor’s laboratory” about it – a slightly zany quality that has you wondering what you’re going to see next. Anything could happen!
