Hattie Stewart‘s dentist probably doesn’t keep her sitting around too long in the waiting room, or else the practice copy of Coarse Angling Today is liable to get the treatment before her teeth do. Stewart gets up to all sorts of mischief when left alone with glossy magazines, and a selection of her “Doodle Bombs” are on view at No Walls in Brighton for the artist’s first solo show.
No venerable publication is safe from Stewart’s redesigns, no cover superstar beyond a slapstick makeover as the young London illustrator gets subversive on their asses, and other areas, plastering the icons with bucketloads of suspicious looking runny goo, pop art tattoos and pairs of adoring cartoon eyes which pop in excitement to see the famous figures pose. All very playful, but the hollowed out and blacked out sockets of the likes of Rihanna and Miley Cyrus hint at a dark undercurrents. The exhibition, entitled Hello Cheeky, runs from 29 March to 26 April.
