We like to keep a beady eye on the artistic endeavours of Sonic Youth founder and bassist Kim Gordon, and our entirely legal and not-at-all stalkerish surveillance reveals that she has been hard at work in the hills of Los Angeles, transforming Rudolf Schindler’s 1936 Fitzpatrick-Leland House in the creation of Design Office: Coming Soon.
Started in 1980, Design Office was conceived as an alternative to the studio creation, gallery exhibition format, originally using friends’ apartments as venues. Schindler’s beautiful Modernist building started life as a “spec” house, designed to showcase a new development in the L.A. Hills, but is currently home to Gordon’s latest project which includes a series called Wreath Paintings. The swirling circular works show the wreath in a domestic setting, highlighting their use as a symbol of festive celebration and times of plenty, as well as times of mourning. Arranged to give the impression of a work in progress, this installation is being run in conjunction with the Gagosian gallery; viewing is by appointment only, and closing date is 26 April.
