Weil am Rhein is a German town that sits in the corner of the country near the borders of both Switzerland and France, and in this town is the VitraHaus, designed by Herzog & de Meuron as a show-house for the products of Swiss design company Vitra. The interior of VitraHaus is regularly changed, and recently it was the loft space’s turn to get a makeover. The loft is now something of a convergence itself, as Vitra invited Finnish furniture company Artek to contribute to the new look under the guidance of designer-curator Studioilse.
Hopefully now the equation Vitra + Artek x studioilse makes perfect sense. The three creative forces have joined to imagine a loft apartment for a fictional Finnish-German couple called Harri and Astrid, he a musician and she a set designer. Their place is packed full of mementos from their life together, and as well as souvenirs their memories are bound together in pieces of fine furniture whose value is in the time and experiences they represent as much as what they cost. Which is a good thing, as you won’t get much change out of £5,000 for a pair of those office chairs. Our Harri must have sold a lot of fictional records. Still, plenty to put on your aspirational wishlists…
