Do You Want a Flake In That, Love?

Of course we flippin' do, it wouldn't be a 99 without one...

The sun is making a valiant effort to rear its shiny head, and it seems like a Bank Holiday every weekend, so we thought we’d add to your summery feelings with news of Luke Stephenson’s latest project 99 x 99s. Last year Luke set off on an ice-cream odyssey, travelling 3,500 miles around the coastline of Great Britain over 25 days on a mission to get to the heart of one of our seaside holiday’s most integral and evocative treats – the 99.

For our foreign readers (and Brits who’ve never made it out of their inner-city hellholes), the 99 is a brilliantly simple and long-standing classic available mainly from ice-cream vans and seaside kiosks. Super-soft and very melty vanilla ice-cream on a wafer cone, with a Flake chocolate bar stuck in it, with or without sprinkles, syrup and other toppings. But even with such a simple recipe, not all 99s are the same, as Luke was to find out…

I genuinely just had to get up in the middle of writing this to go out and buy an ice-cream, and I wouldn’t blame you if you abandoned me to do the same, but before you do, head over to Luke’s Kickstarter page for more details and to pledge some money to get his photobook made.
