Bring out the canapés! Uncork the sparkling wine! Gallery ALL in Los Angeles has opened its doors, announcing its arrival with an inaugural exhibition whose international flavour serves as a statement of intent for the organisation’s future direction. Focusing on contemporary design, Gallery ALL has brought over Naihan Li and Zhoujie Zhang – two of China’s best and brightest – for a joint show at the new venue on South Broadway.
A first time visitor to the USA, Naihan Li has expanded on her series The Crates. Modelled on the kind of protective transport cases that bands use to ship their equipment around in, Li’s versions are polished metal which open to reveal surprising contents: fully functional office and home environments. The collection comments on the transient lifestyle of modern times and the need for space-saving ingenuity, as well as being extremely attractive sculptural items in their own right. Zhoujie Zhang is also interested in the changing nature of modern life, with one eye on the future. His computer-aided designs use parametrics to digitally create his designs. For Gallery ALL, he has produced Triangulation Series in brass for the first time. The show runs until August 3.
