The man to watch in Brisbane, Alexander Lotersztain of creative studio Derlot, continues his extraordinary winning streak with The Pantry at QUT Gardens Point. This super-civilized campus café in Old Government House is the perfect place for a spot of afternoon tea; I must say the students of QUT must be blessed with more refined sensibilities than the rabble who run this website did in their day, although that is not, perhaps, saying a lot. Still, good for them. They are the future and all that…
Right, so the other half of this project is Nick Abbink of Zen Catering; he and Lotersztain have gone minimalist and understated in their approach. The star of the show at The Pantry is the long bar, although the clean lines and unobtrusive wall-matching white centrepiece announces itself with a polite cough rather than visual trumpets. The vintage pendant lights were shipped over from Germany (there must be an, albeit unlikely, shortage in Oz), and the stools and tables are from Derlot Editions‘ Picket range. A+ for all concerned.
