Beach holidays are not like they were in the good old days. One can’t just cover oneself in cocoa butter and lie in the sun for eight hours a day, turning occasionally. Now we are in more enlightened times we know that sort of behaviour will give us the cancer, so other ways must be found to occupy our time at the beach. Top of the list are drinking cocktails and eating ice-cream, preferably in a shady spot out of reach of those nasty UV rays, and Barcelona beach bunnies have now got a new place to chill courtesy of the city’s tapas tycoon Carles Abellan.
The headline news at La Baceloneta Guingeta is the supply of A-list ice-cream from Jordi Roca, one of the brothers behind the world-renowned El Celler de Can Roca. Having sampled it at the fantastical Rocambolesc Gelateria we can tell you that Jordi’s frozen scoop of heaven is reason enough for a visit to this bar, but should you need more, then it’s a rather cool place to relax thanks to the work of Sandra Tarruella Interioristas. Red is pretty much a mandatory colour for the Barceloneta chiringuito, and added to that we have slightly burnt orange, black, and a military olive green, all put together in a way that responds best to the light filtering through the roof slats – you might still need a bit of sun-cream on if you want to avoid looking like a lobster that’s been caught in one of those pots hanging overhead.
