How would you like to be remembered? Is living a decent life and being known as a pretty good egg enough, or do you yearn to leave more of a legacy behind? Guerilla artist Ron English is a believer in the theory that all art is a futile attempt to cheat death by creating something permanent, and that tenet is central to his new book Death and the Eternal, out now from Korero Press.
Mortality was brought sharply into focus for English when he had his own brush with death at the hands of a knife-wielding maniac. The artist was kidnapped by an unhinged colleague who demanded English critiqued his life’s work, before destroying it all with the aforementioned blade. Yikes! Known for his fusion of fine art motifs, Pop Art icons and a biting sense of humour aimed at consumerism and, English’s latest collection continues in signature vein, with an added macabre twist. Artists such as Rene Magritte and Frida Kahlo star alongside other less highbrow subjects, like The Teletubbies and Mickey Mouse. Definitely a volume to keep out of the reach of your kids. Available from the Korero Press webstore, or Atomica Gallery, London.
