A collection of photographs called Longboards, Tattoos and a Journey to Mars was always going to be a mixed bag, but Sonia Szóstak‘s work, while varying a lot in genre and subject matter, is of a uniformly high standard. The Polish artist has been chosen as the inaugural exhibitor at NO WÓDKA, a concept store showcasing the best of Poland’s fashion, art and design output in Berlin, and a fine choice it was too.
The 19 photographs that comprise the collection were taken by Szóstak over the past four years and represent a selection from distinctly different projects. Classical portraiture references her interest in art history; some images, as in her are-they-dead-or-just-having-a-rest nudes, are elaborately staged, other images enjoy a natural spontaneity, but the 24-year-old displays an enviable ability in whichever style she tackles. The exhibition opens at the store, located on Pappelallee 10, on 11 October – when Szóstak will be there for a chat. Ends 29 November.
