Play It Again

Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin head to UK to re-stage cinematic Venice Biennale showstopper...

Horses. Frisbees. Metallic body paint. Violence and depravity. Just another day at home with art collaborators Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin. Perhaps not just any day, but these are the kind of things that go on when the duo film at their Los Angeles house. Fitch and Trecartin are soon to revamp and reassemble their major installation Priority Innfield at Zabludowicz Collection in London, having been among the most popular exhibits at the 55th Venice Biennale festival.

The project involves a complete takeover of the venue with paint and carpet, and centres around the presentation of four films. For each film, a viewing area is built within the superstructure, with a fifth acting as an observation deck from which visitors can watch the viewers. In CENTER JENNY, students in a post-future world study their ancestors via a live-action video game, in which they strive to level-up the caste system through increasingly cruel competition. Item Falls, filmed at the artists’ Los Feliz home, sees a group of performers trapped in an audition while being attacked by special effects. Junior War features edited footage of Trecartin’s Ohio high school shot in the 1990s, and in Comma Boat he portrays an unhinged film director. The Priority Innfield event is taking place from 2 October to 21 December.
