A Matter of Record

Music-mad Pete McKee reveals his love of vinyl at Manchester exhibition...

The basement of Kosmonaut in Manchester’s Northern Quarter is being transformed into a record shop in preparation for the visit of acclaimed Sheffield artist Pete McKee. Known for his collaborations with the likes of Oasis and The Arctic Monkeys, McKee’s love of music is to the fore in his latest collection Thud Crackle Pop, a title describing the life-changing experience of plonking a needle onto vinyl.

In McKee’s A Case for Vinyl, his protagonist sits in blissful rapture as the music plays, seemingly without a care in the world and although it looks like all his other worldly possessions have gone, the record player remains as a constant companion. The artist also notes music’s ability to be a uniting force in a relationship; Design for Loving links music and memory as two lovers sit down to enjoy some of their vinyl collection with a backdrop of holiday photographs. The opening of Thud Crackle Pop will see Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess perform a DJ set on 13 November, and while it’s a ticket only event, there will be a chance to win a couple on the venue’s Facebook page. The exhibition is open to the public on 14 and 15 November.
