Los Angeles hotel The Line knocked our socks off when it opened with its uncompromising design. Now it seems the man responsible, interior designer Sean Knibb, has gone all soft on us, introducing a bit of fluffiness to his otherwise hardcore environment. It’s only temporary though. Knibb has created a special suite and lounge design at the hotel to welcome visitors to the Hello Kitty Con 2014 – the event was held in L.A. earlier this month to mark the cutesy Japanese phenomenon’s 40th anniversary.
The Line was the convention’s official hotel (quite a daring collaboration for both parties) and to make the visiting fans feel welcome, Knibb set about transforming a lounge into a Hello Kitty experience like no other. Retaining its all-important urban edge, the area was pitched at the adult HK aficionados, putting a grown-up spin on the theme. A graffiti’d bathroom stall and some anarchic paint splashes and strewn toilet paper suggested a wild side to proceedings, and the custom quilt and daisy-covered bath were extra special features. As well as Knibb’s room, chef Roy Choi introduced Spam musubi to his menu in homage to Kitty White, and the Poketo store also joined in the fun with some great HK design items.
