A new generation is shaping the direction of Dutch design, and you can grab a behind-the-scenes peek at the practice of these youthful innovators and their exciting ideas in How We Work: The Avant-garde of Dutch Design. The book, from publisher Lecturis, grants unrivalled access to 15 of the country’s most interesting designers like Scholten & Baijings, Mae Engelgeer, and Formafantasma. Photographed by Inga Powilleit and styled by Tatjana Quax, it’s not only an absorbing archive of the country’s top contemporary design talent, but an enrapturing dose of Through the Keyhole voyeurism that captures some very unconventional working, and living, spaces.
There’s plentiful substance to the eye-candy too: How do these designers work? What are their processes? Where does their inspiration come from? These are the questions that the authors approached the book with, but as the project was taking shape, a new question kept recurring – one that united the diverse practices of the featured designers. What to do with the surplus? This conundrum is tackled through the design process, choice of material and making techniques, forcing the designers to think and act differently. The book, which was recently launched at Dutch Design Week Eindhoven, is available to buy from the publisher, and there will be a companion exhibition beginning on 24 January at Stedelijk Museum, ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
