If a neighbourhood is good enough for Pablo Picasso then it’s good enough for us, although Barcelona’s Passeig de Colom has probably changed quite a bit since the artist was here; Picasso painted his early piece Ciencia y Caridad at his first studio located here in 1897. Another 19th Century work of art created on the tree-lined street – that’s nicely located on the edges of Barri Gotic, El Born and Barceloneta – is architect Francesc Daniel Molina’s façade at The Serras, which has been restored to its former glory as part of the hotel’s renovation.
Opening in the new year, The Serras’ handsome exterior will be a taste of things to come – guests leaving the city’s bustle outside and stepping into a soothing atmosphere of grey, silver, sand, mustard, and green chosen by interior designer Eva Martinez. The area was once a fishing enclave, and its history is echoed in the choice of colours and of materials. As well as the industrial heritage aspects, Martinez has recalled design elements of yesteryear, such as the tiles – popular floor coverings in the Modernista era – which now find a new purpose as headboards (each storey of the hotel has a different tile denoting a different Barcelona neighbourhood). If relaxing in the bath is your thing, we recommend a junior suite, which offer free-standing bathtubs with amazing harbour views.
