Rock Star

Eminent naturalist and photographer Feodor Pitcairn explores Iceland's stunning landscapes...

Iceland has long been fêted for it’s beautiful scenery, but rarely has the island’s diverse landscapes, rugged majesty and awe-inspiring scale been so magnificently depicted as it has in this study by Feodor Pitcairn and Ari Trausti Guðmundsson. Primordial Landscapes: Iceland Revealed presents the photography of the former, a naturalist, artist and cinematographer, with the words of the latter, whose many fields of expertise include geophysics, volcanology and mountaineering and who has published more than 30 books, including poetry and prose.

Iceland has been shaped and reshaped over millennia by the power of nature. Active volcanoes spew out molten lava which cools to form a textured landscape. Ice melting and freezing cracks rock formations, while running water carves channels in the surface. There are snowcaps and sand deposits, mountains and ravines. Sparse flora and the mineral profile of the soil itself adds dramatic bursts of colour onto the landscapes. Rather than present the images as abstract scenes, the book adds a map and provides geological and cultural information that lies as a bedrock of context.
