Brooklyn’s Henry Hargreaves is never going to be able to escape this line, this one line: Henry Hargreaves likes playing with his food. Truth is, Hargreaves should be sent straight to the naughty step for his endeavours — from deep-frying iPads to recreating Modernist masterpieces with rice and cooking up iconic band riders for prosperity (Nine Inch Nails asked for two boxes of corn starch?), the artist/photographer enjoys pushing food to its artistic limits.
For his latest hors d’oeuvre, HH has teamed up with fellow food botherer Charlotte Omnès for Dying to Eat, a visual account of details that — on the whole — got lost on their way from Fleming’s Bond novels to the big screen. Offering a glimpse into what may have been considered a posh feed in their day, the project sees James dining on the likes of little neck clams and fried chicken Maryland with bacon and sweet corn (Live and Let Die), eggs Benedict (The Man with the Golden Gun) and fried soles with Welsh rarebits (Moonraker).
Working meticulously on echoing settings as varied as a Swiss hotel room to a Miami beach club, the duo have designed the meals to encourage a sense of dropping straight into the scene of one of Fleming’s famous tales; fitting as, by coincidence, the artist’s grandfather had served with Fleming during the war — going on to consult the author on some tailoring details in the iconic books.
