There’s even more of the award-winning Devon Café to enjoy with the opening of a new premises on Danks Street. Devon can proudly claim to be the Sydney Morning Herald’s Best Food Café,and Zach Tan and his team aren’t resting on their laurels at the new place, with lots of exciting things happening to the innovative menu.
Tan’s Malay heritage comes to the fore with other influences from the wider Asian region in dishes such as the long-time favourite known as Breakfast with the Sakumas (miso grilled salmon with a smoked eel croquette and a radish salad), and Japanese red bean and matcha doughnuts. Youngsters will enjoy the Dr Seuss-inspired Green Eggs and Ham, while those who are in a rush can combine savoury and sweet in one course by pairing fries with ice cream from the soft serve machine. Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.
The building’s double-height interior and expansive windows mean a light-filled dining experience, augmented by the decorative arrangement of pendants hanging from the exposed ceiling beams. Other prettifying additions to the industrial shell include a subtle white neon sign, the attractive pattern backing the serving counter, and some lovely geometric designs weaving their magic as part of a central partition wall. Devon regulars should note that the dinner operation — Devon by Night — is relocating here from the Surry Hills branch which will otherwise remain open as usual.
