Atix Hotel, La Paz

A soaring new La Paz design hotel is setting its standards high with a series of lofty ambitions...

Sitting more than 3,500m above sea level on the Andes’ Altiplano plateau, the Bolivian capital La Paz is high in many ways. Sidestepping well-known stereotypes, the city’s latest altitude-busting recognition is as a bastion of high-style; thanks to a new member of the revered Design Hotels™ club, Atix Hotel.

It’s high all the way: soaring art (courtesy of acclaimed Bolivian artist Gastón Ugalde, known as the Andean Warhol), lofty design (owing to Stuart Narofsky and Jennifer Rusch of New York-based Narofsky Architecture), elevated cuisine (restaurant Ona celebrating Bolivia’s rich biodiversity and culinary traditions from Lake Titicaca to the Amazon). Which is not to mention in sheer presence: Atix Hotel soars above the city with its rooftop bar and infinity pool, and most notably with its façade; clad in locally-sourced natural timber and Comanche stone — which was used to pave La Paz’s streets throughout the 1920s and ‘30s

Atix Hotel rises high above the vibrant and exclusive Calacoto neighbourhood, and is just 20 minutes away from the ‘high-octane energy’ of downtown La Paz. The neighbourhood is also nicely places for a warmer climate, thanks to its lower altitude in this city so famed for its dizzying heights and singular aesthetics.
