As much of a local hangout as it is hotel, Ormond Group’s latest hospitality concept is a design-conscious property housing 99 guest rooms, dynamic social spaces, a self-serve dive bar and cultural programming; making Chow Kit neighbourhood hotspot, MoMo’s, a real hit with the cool cats of Kuala Lumpur.
With interiors by Sydney-based studio, Akin Atelier, the micro-rooms—albeit small—feature everything a guest desires, from plush beds to mood lighting and smart TVs; whilst the aesthetic (in-room and throughout the hotel) is made up of raw concrete, laminated timber and combed plaster that complement the dusty pinks, washed greens and aged brass found on furnishings, fabrics and objets throughout.
Alongside the affordable bedrooms, guests and locals can mingle in the ‘social space’, MoMo’s KL encouraging whoever is there to “live, play and stay”. Having swapped the traditional lobby for The Playground—a hub for events, exhibitions and networking—this is where experiences are shared and memories are made. In a nod to Asia’s open house culture, front-of-house staff can be found handing out coffee and cocktails when welcoming newcomers to the hotel.
Serving Mexican dishes alongside draft beer and bottled cocktails, the casual dining option MoMosita’s is a gritty self-serve dive bar where guests can devour tacos, tostadas guacamole and salads washed down with momojitos, pisco sours, mezcals and more. Christian Bauer and Eddie Chew’s low-key establishment with social experience at heart follows the trend for hotels as hangouts, doing so with a casual strut of unruffled confidence; a fine example in a crowded hospitality space.
