Serving seriously good bagels out of a spot that shouts serious New York cool, Hank’s Café and Bagelry is located in Armadale, a few kilometres outside of Melbourne‘s CBD, and has been inspired by a fusion of the inner suburb’s historic 19th century railway precinct, as well as the Big Apple itself.
Designed by Leftfield Studio, the boutique practice improved the vintage nuances of the building, including the façade and brick interior, to create an urbane eatery that enjoys lashings of natural light. Enhancing what was already there, the studio took care to highlight the textures of what the building already enjoyed, while adding fresh style with the crisp lines.
Customers will first notice a handwritten signage that pays homage to the simplicity of what this place is. Inside the 65 square metre space that is diminutive in footprint only, blue-steel framework offsets the original pressed metal ceilings to create a new introspection on heritage chic.
Talented chefs pour their hearts and souls into making bagels the way they’re meant to be: chewy, malty and fresh. Fillings include Hank’s beetroot and gin cured salmon with herbs, red onion and cream cheese; pastrami, cream cheese, sauerkraut, Russian dressing, pickles and Swiss cheese; and chicken schnitzel, Za’atar and parmesan, cheddar, slaw, aioli and pickles … which means customers will discover a mouthwatering variety as well as a healthy dose of New York in each and every bite.
Simple, fresh and flavoursome, all served up in a stylish little corner of this pretty Melbourne suburb, Hank’s Café & Bagelry is sure to be a runaway success.
