The first design-led boutique hotel in Georgetown, South Carolina, The George is a new waterfront property with two culinary concepts that aims to redefine luxury accommodations in the region with 56 rooms and suites that tell their own stories and nod to the property’s wonderful location besides the water.
From Indigo Road Hospitality Group and Winyah Hospitality, and with interiors by Jenny Keenan Design, The George Hotel is a decadent affair featuring bold and bespoke early American design such as a jewel-toned, fabric-skirted front desk, historic fabrics and mural wallpapers, patterned sofas, wing backed chairs and oriental rugs.
Life along the water inspires a particular kind of slumber, and the rooms — 42 of them being water facing — are transportive spaces inspired by both the immediate surrounding 18th and 19th-century architecture, and the natural environment it sits among. Experience understated elegance and a night’s sleep fit for royalty on lavish, custom-crafted mattresses complemented by bespoke headboards.
An arched hallway covered in ‘Birds Tapestry’, a striking wallpaper by Iskel from Schumacher, calls in the natural surroundings and wildlife as guests pass through to the elevators while a large whimsical painting of a mermaid and alligator painting by the artist, David Boatwright, of Charleston, hangs in the very same corridor.
With prime marina access, The George is set to become a popular stopover for boaters travelling the eastern coast and, as such, the culinary concepts needed to be spot on to satisfy all the hungry guests due to pass through. The Independent pays homage to Georgetown’s former (and forever iconic) seafood market of the same name, offering a view of the city’s historic main thoroughfare and a menu that skews seasonal and Southern, while Eliza’s offers waterfront views and cocktails to be enjoyed besides a warming fire pit.
