Mayfair private members club, Annabel’s, known globally as one of the world’s most exceedingly elegant of its kind, have introduced a new gastronomic adventure from their second floor restaurant that honours the vibrant flavours and rustic charm of South America: say hello to Bolívar.
Situated in the heart of this most exclusive of London’s neighbourhoods, Bolívar was designed by London- and LA-based interior architecture and design studio Fettle in collaboration with owner and entrepreneur Richard Caring, who restyled the 75 square metre space into a theatrical 18th century-inspired Mexican Cantina.
Transporting members and guests back in time, and nodding to Latin American aesthetics, the decadent space features a rustic entrance door, distressed wall finishes and antiqued furniture and fabrics that adorn the space to create a unique and immersive experience. The natural, rich and earthy colour palette has been purposely paired back in stark contrast to the rest of the private members’ club, giving Bolívar an identity all of its own.
Bespoke lighting comprises wrought iron chandeliers and oversized wrought iron hanging lanterns on the walls; wrought iron has also been used by the designers to frame the windows; a central stone fireplace on the back wall of the restaurant creates an intimate and atmospheric ambience; and the walls have been aged with peeling plasterwork painted in faded yellow to give an authentic aged aesthetic, exposing what would be the original brick and stone throughout the interior.
Fettle also reclaimed beautiful exposed timber planks for the ceiling, as well as distressed the leather upholstery on the dining and bar chairs. To complement the dining chairs, new tables with tops were made from reclaimed timber boards. Artwork, meanwhile, was custom bought and created by Adam Ellis Studio, combining a mix of paintings with antique maps and wall hangings.
Completely transforming the existing interior within Annabel’s, and creating a space with a strong identity, sense of theatre and truth, in Bolívar, Fettle have fashioned a new icon for London’s upscale Mayfair neighbourhood.
