Embracing the trend of eclectic maximalism, nothing is subtle about new East Nashville restaurant, Fancypants. Not least its name.
Opened in July this year, Fancypants does as it suggests; seeking to reimagine the conventional, blurring the lines between sophistication and fun, and celebrating the unexpected through a hefty helping of opulence. Helmed by founder/partner Michael Shemtov, creative director/partner Jake Mogelson, and chef/partner Bryan Weaver, Fancypants Nashville offers a playful take on traditional fine dining, reimagining the typical upscale restaurant into a convivial space where gust experience and delicious food is paramount.
Located in East Nashville in a former Piggly Wiggly grocery store, longtime design collaborator Powell Nashville, alongside graphics partner Made by Mode, retained remnants of the building’s former life, keeping the industrial aged concrete and exposed trusses to provide a raw, textured canvas. A visually rich space, the colour palette features burgundy, emerald green and gold, plus stylish, 1970s-inspired patterns and dozens of lamps and sconces.
Slabs of colourful stone and modern elements are juxtaposed by warm cherry wood finishes, natural textures and luxe velvet drapery. There’s a ‘living room’ feeling thanks to a selection of ceramics and art that the team have collected from their travels throughout the years — including raku pottery from the ’90s, gilded geometric mirrors from Mexico and modern silk screen prints from Tel Aviv — all of which are proudly displayed on bookshelves above the banquettes throughout the restaurant.
An approachable spot infused with personality, colour, and good vibes, Fancypants embraces the ethos of “more is more,” and wholeheartedly welcomes its guests with fine, southern hospitality.
