Situated at the foot of a historic castle — Leiden’s oldest structure, dating back to 1060 — Hotel Rumour is a bustling restaurant and social hub that can host everything from movie nights to ‘Disco Bingo,’ private dining to intimate drinks, and much more besides.
Studio Modijefsky brought the carriage house into the 21st century, working on everything from the name and brand identity to the merchandise and postcards. Despite the confusing name and the display cabinet in the hallway that showcases gift shop staples like bathrobes and keychains, guests cannot stay the night at Hotel Rumour, rather spend a good few hours making merriment; after which We Heart does not endorse sleeping on the sofas.
Drawing inspiration from the rich history of the iconic Burcht van Leiden castle, Studio Modijefsky integrated and enhanced original elements including high ceilings, grand arches and wooden beams, and complementing them with bespoke furniture, lights, curated materials and upholstery fabrics.
When heading down from the castle, guests will notice a large terrace whose boundaries are marked by two wooden corner benches with a custom round bench encircling the tree between them. Playful tan-coloured parasols, pigeon blue metal furniture, bespoke wooden seating elements and captivating graphics provide a clue as to what’s inside.
Set over two floors, the ground floor can be whatever you desire: a place to eat, to drink or to dance the night away. Filled with an array of art, seating options and custom lights, there’s something here to suit every mood and whim. The bar is a key feature that delineates the dining space, and blends seamlessly while seizing attention of revellers thanks to the counter with a beige terrazzo top and bevelled edges.
Hotel Rumour’s lavish top floor is primarily used as a lounge cocktail bar. Proportioned naturally into three areas by the staircases and wooden ceiling beams, guests climb the stairs to reach a ‘blink and you miss it’ casual lounge area, before reaching ‘La Suite Petite,’ a small area for intimate dining for eight, and is home to its own private bar. Past the heave curtain with pink patterns, the ‘Salone Royale,’ awaits and is a spacious attic area for large groups, furnished with a combination of comfortable poufs, chairs, daybeds, and tables.
A beautiful old building given new life by a typically swish Modijefsky design aesthetic, Hotel Rumour is a playful place to party in this historic corner of The Netherlands.
