The world’s first StandardX hotel has opened in Fitzroy, Melbourne, the offshoot of the renowned global The Standard hotels, officially touted as the brand’s “rebellious younger sibling” with an offering of “intuitive hospitality without the pretention.”
Designed to ‘check in, and check out the city’, The StandardX takes inspiration from Fitzroy’s Little Band scene of yesteryear, when artists and musicians such as Nick Cave, Ollie Olsen, and Stuart Grant helped establish the experimental post-punk scene which flourished in Melbourne from late 1978 until early 1981. A neighbourhood steeped in history and remaining as vibrant as ever today, the design hotel is also inspired by the community’s energy, creativity, and constant reinvention.
With architecture helmed by Woods Bagot, The StandardX Melbourne features the brand’s signature blend of design and culture. Made from weathering steel, the building is designed to inherit the gritty, urban texture of the city-fringe suburb in a design that — rather than shiny and pristine — reads like it belongs.
Another We Heart favourite were in charge of the interior design, Hecker Guthrie taking inspiration from The Standard’s classic imprint to reflect the suburb’s nomadic and rebellious spirit into the 125 rooms and public spaces. Fitted with features for discerning travellers, each includes The Standard’s signature king bed, luxe linens, bathrobe hoodie, slippers, Davines amenities, SMEG kettle, Frank Green French Press and more. Making a statement, whether staying in the intimate Cozy King to the spacious Suite Spot (the latter a 48 square-metre abode with city views), guest rooms are cheeky and charming in equal measure.
Hungry? For ‘bang on flavours’, head to BANG, the property’s all-day dining spot with a focus on Thai street food and helmed by executive chef Justin Dingle-Garciyya. THE BOX, meanwhile, is a well-stocked neighbourhood bodega and boasts a curated mix of daily essentials, wellness items, fashionable goods and delicious snacks and drinks to enjoy on the go or in your room.
Designed with a contemporary, uncomplicated aesthetic in mind, the StandardX Melbourne is the perfect fit for this hip and historic neighbourhood.
