Inspired by the golden age of nightlife, Calgary‘s Sweet Loretta Bar nods to the throbbing energy of 1970s discos and vintage sound studios, the late-night venue situated in the city’s design and arts district and offering an inclusive space for like-minded souls who love everything design, art, architecture and music.
Designed by Victor Choy in collaboration with FRANK Architecture & Interiors, the team looked to now-closed iconic venues including Mercury, Republik, Embassy, and Deluxe Lounge, looking to revivify the nostalgia and essence that these lounges and clubs once exuded.
Creating a retro-inspired spot in what was once a furniture store and design studio, Sweet Loretta Bar features key design elements such as unique geometric millwork ceiling, custom lighting, and vintage furnishings. The ceiling was inspired by midcentury architect John Lautner, and has been painstakingly constructed, adding a striking visual element to the space; while bespoke lighting along with modified vintage fixtures, reinforce the vintage sound studio and tiki vibe, creating an inviting aura.
A inviting space to sip a cocktail and listen to some sweet sounds, the bar’s main level features a suspended midcentury style fireplace complemented by artworks by Ken Samuelson. The feature bar is adorned with custom tiles by local artisan Becky McMaster of Workshop Studios, while the retro interpretation of parquet flooring adds an intricate touch. In the lower lounge, artworks hang beside the tiki bar where carefully curated artefacts and ephemera tell stories of the designer’s travels to Hawaii.
With a food menu to complement the stellar drinks on offer, Sweet Loretta Bar is sure to have Calgary locals grooving through evening times till late; a fine addition to the Canadian city’s hospitality scene.
