A two decade march through creative evolution is set to be celebrated in a new exhibition as Enter Gallery marks 20 years of collaboration with contemporary artist Dan Baldwin; last seen ‘under the influence’ on these pages some eight years ago. Opening 5 December at the gallery’s Brighton location, Dan Baldwin X Enter Gallery: 20 Years offers pop art fanatics a deep dive into Baldwin’s distinctive world, with a particular focus on his works on paper.
At the heart of the exhibition are ten unique original artworks, each offering an interplay of Baldwin’s renowned hand-painted backgrounds and black outlined compositions. Layered with meaning and emotion, each work embodies themes that have defined Baldwin’s career: nature’s gentle beauty spliced with life’s darker undercurrents. Expect signature birds, butterflies, and flowers juxtaposed with foreboding symbols in a balance of light and dark, life and death.
The public will also be treated to three new colourways of Baldwin’s acclaimed limited-edition print, The Road Less Travelled, along with the original artwork debuted at the gallery’s The Mix exhibition earlier in 2024. A selection of smaller original studies provide an accessible entry point for collectors keen to own an original Dan Baldwin piece, underscoring Enter Gallery’s dedication to ensuring that art is approachable and inclusive.
“I began visiting Brighton when I was 14 and after graduating in 1996 I moved here, got my studio, and began my practice,” Baldwin reflects. “I started to exhibit in the Brighton Fringe Festival, and in 2004 I began producing prints and exploring limited editions. The first person I showed them to was Lawrence Alkin. This began our 20 year journey.”
In tribute to this enduring partnership, Baldwin has created a new original work, The Mind Echoes of Past Experiences, rendered on handmade watercolour paper and reimagined across ten unique hand-painted backgrounds. The pieces, finished with silkscreen, celebrate Baldwin’s deft grasp of colour and printmaking, with no two works alike.
“Dan has been a cornerstone of our gallery’s journey,” Alkin shares. “His work has always resonated deeply with collectors and art lovers, not just for its visual impact, but for the way it bridges contrasts—light and dark, beauty and threat. Working together for two decades has been a privilege, and this exhibition is a tribute to the creativity and vision that Dan brings to every piece.”
The private view event, taking place Thursday, 5 December, from 18:00 to 20:00, will officially launch this landmark exhibition for the gallery, welcoming admirers and collectors to celebrate Baldwin’s dynamic artistic legacy. Whether a long-time follower or fresh to his singular approach pop art, this showcase is an opportunity to engage with one of British contemporary art’s most captivating voices.
Dan Baldwin X Enter Gallery: 20 Years runs at Enter Gallery, 13 Bond Street, Brighton, BN1 1RD, 5—11 December, 2024, and will be an unmissable tribute to a partnership that has shaped not just a gallery, but a movement in modern art.
